gotta have you

sleepingpuppy.jpg

it is simply amazing how my time slips away. In my past grad school gig, i had a lot more time to blog and to read the internets as I did a lot of babysitting. Now I have so much reading. it seems like i work more now. I might. I work into the evening most evening. My time just evaporates. Though i don't mind the work. The stuff i do is really interesting, so i don't really mind spending my sunday doing work.

Last night we had Tom and Jon over for dinner. i really like having people over. I made chili and cornbread and an apple pie. I trying out different recipes. Pies are hard to experiment with because it is hard to make a little pie and you can't really taste it (like batter) to make sure everything's going to be good in the end. The chili and cornbread were great; the apple pie was good, but not good enough for me. There are a couple of ways to make apple pie in addition to the ingredients, and i'm on a quest for the best.

I really like entertaining. I like sitting around our table until 1 am chatting. I got caught up on all the mat sci news. and it was fun. People like to come over and play with the puppy, and we need people to come play with the puppy, so it is a great arrangement.

i love apple season. we got some amazing honeycrisps at the store last week. They were one sale and they were so fabulous that i got some more this week, even though they weren't on sale. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but I guess i didn't notice they were $4/lb. We got three large apples, and it was like $8. Oh well, we had one when we got home and decided they are totally worth it.

well, i have finally finally stopped drowning in the school work, meaning, i've back to maintain my daily level of keeping up instead of just doing what was due. policy policy school is so interesting. but a lot of reading.

turns out that it is the perfect time to get a puppy as half the days i am home by 1 and the the other half by 3 or 4 and then have fridays off somewhat. i can't imagine leaving pepper alone so much under my last grad school gig. even when she is biting my feet and jeans and saying no is like talking to a brick way i am loving being around. she sleeps on my lap while i read my political economy or work on problem sets. She is growing like crazy so soon she'll be too big. yesterday she jerked in her sleep and slip right off my lap. I caught her, but it startled us both.

do you love me question mark

Finally, there has been a resolution to the math camp saga. The administration agreed with my assessment. It was unfair to the people who did not go to math camp and did not know about the multivariable question. The people who did go to math camp did know. If everyone had the same information, i.e. that everyone did not know about the multivariable problem, then the scores would have been lower across the board and the percentage required for passing would have been lower.

They ended up throwing out the multivariable question for the people who did not attend math camp, and so I've officially passed the math exam. It was an interesting experience. I had expected to have to compromise (i'd take the exam again, but not have to take the review class that is required for those who fail the exam), so i am quite pleasantly surprised to not have to compromise.

I am thinking it's a sign / that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images

Whew. I guess I’ll recap the fabulous weekend. The weather was perfect. Traffic up there not so much. I think that most people got up there with just a small amount of trouble. One of my favorite parts of the weekend was spending time with my friends. I did get to spend more time with them then I thought I would. I hung out with Sarah, Kent, and Carter late Friday night. I cut programs while they entertained me. I spent a large amount of time with liz, who is awesome and really needs to move to Chicago. We got to have Saturday brunch with Chris and Ray. One of the best parts of the weekend was getting to know Ray, who I adore.

The pre-wedding softball (mushball) game had an amazing turn out. Way way more people than I expected came out. There was like 60 people there, the majority of them playing. (The wedding guest last was ~100) I stayed for an hour until the bridal party had to go get showers. I hear that the game went on for a bit.

The bridemaids got ready in suite until pictures started. Our photographer, though awesome, was a tad crazy with the pictures. From the time with the pictures of the dress and accessories with the getting ready pictures to the wedding party pictures, we were tilting and smiling for 3 or so hours. The light was perfect, the fall hills an awesome back-drop.

The ceremony was on the harbor on Lake Geneva at sunset. There was a harvest moon that rose as the sun set. It wasn’t that cold (perfect for suits). The ceremony was short and sweet and down to earth. My minister who came up wed us is awesome. She played mushball and is all around the greatest. She had a great time too. And people loved her as much as I do.

The cocktail hour was full of chatting with friends and people I didn’t really know. The reception was great. The food was better than at the tasting (though I didn’t eat much really, too many people to talk to). The cake was AWESOME. I had 3 pieces (HEY it’s my wedding). I would totally just have the cake lady make me cake every year. The band was spectacular. Their first set was more “classic” song (i.e. songs chris loves) that were made for swing dancing and for the older guests. During the first band break Pete and Jay played. It was a surprise for me from ben. (The first dance song was a surprise for ben from me – All I Want is You (U2).) Pete and Jay played one of our favorite songs (Such Great Heights – the Iron and Wine version). They also did a couple of other song including one that got everyone out on the floor went was a perfect segway into the bank “funking it up” as ben requested, and the rest of the evening saw the older people drift home and most of the young people dancing like crazy. It was awesome. The band really made the reception from great to awesome.

Not to gush or anything. It was awesome. I would not have a change a single thing. Of course, none of it would have been possible with our awesome parents – for many many reasons. We are so lucky to have such great families.

going to get married

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

counting blue cars

The probability (from one source) of transmission of the AIDs virus is 1 out of every 500 unprotected sexual encounters between an infected person and uninfected person.

The probability of transmission after 500 encounters is 0.63.

Your first reaction is that I must be wrong. From the first statement it seems that you are guaranteed transmission after 500 encounters. But that's not true. There is not some magic bag where there are 499 blank slips and 1 AIDs slip and you just keep using them up until you are done. Every encounter has the same chance and therefore the probability after 500 encounters is 63%.

Not that you should play these odds. But I thought it was interesting. I am a product of a generation in which they scared you so bad that you thought that the probability is 100%, so I was surprised. Of course, as many people can tell you, it only takes once, so use condoms oh single populations!
