i remember the time when I came so close to you

New pictures! The breeder send them Monday. Re: Becca's question, She'll be exactly 8 weeks the first weekend in October. We are going to try to get her then, but might wait until the next depending on when the breeder can meet us in green bay. She'll definitely be smaller than izzy at first. Once she grows, she'll be taller, but she won't surpass her in weight. I bet they'll weigh about the same at their peak. Izzy is losing weight. The nightly 3 flights + medicine is doing her good. Mostly, we got her on pain meds so she doesn't hurt when she moves. (She has arthritis in her spine.) A puppy should help with the moving, but boy is she going to be pissed.
I am in the weird state of wanting time to stand still so i don't get nervous about the defense, and wanting it to speed up so I'll be done and on to less stressful this such as starting at the new school and getting married. The weird thing is the loss of structure to my days. I packed them pretty full up until when i turn in my thesis. now i have stuff to do, but not specific things i have to be a school for. Though some of it i do. It is just weird. I am at school at less now days, that's for sure. I usually come to work when i have something else that brings me to evanston (dinner with friends, mostly, a conference yesterday). I am pretty tired of looking at my thesis and presentation, so i've been taking a lot of breaks to do things like list most of my engineering books on half.com (by ebay). I got some of my books for the fall on it and so listed mine. I should have done it long ago. I am definitely stuck with some of my basic texts (chem, pchem) that have newer editions out that mine from 97. (sigh, how do i have college book almost 10 years old?)
Staying in school for 9 years (so far) has kept me feeling young. Coupled with the fact that none of my friends are married, it feels really weird that the one that is just had a baby. She has been married 4 years (their wedding was the night before I moved to Chicago). Welcome to the world Jack.

cecilia, you're breaking my heart

Here's a picture of the yet-to-be-named puppy. She is a boston terrier. Just to cut off any debate, we decided to go with a full bred puppy because of our cat and planned upon toddlers. I am a firm supporter of rescue groups and animal shelters, but we are not will to take the chance with our toddlers. You can definitely get great dogs from those places, but it is a risk. In the future, I'll be taking in a lot of recused boston terriers, but not while I have small children. BTW, I rescued my kitty, so there.
Anyways, we went with the boston terriers because we wanted a smallish dog (apartment living), but one with long legs for running. Boston terriers also have a great reputation as being good with children.
We found a breeder with a female puppy available in October, which is exactly when we wanted her. (Short of miraculously having a baby, I am not sure if there is one more major life event that i can fit in the next 6 weeks.) We are so excited. Ben is a tad obsessive. As i work on my presentation, he is devouring the books on bostons and puppies we got this morning. We are both committed to raising a nonannoying dog, but well loved dog. I think a 5 mile run daily (once it is old enough) will help in that goal.
Besides the dog (and the defense presentation), i've had a chill couple of days. we are cosmo sitting. i saw little miss sunshine with tom. it was excellent. ben broke the handle off his car. that was awesome. the look on his face was priceless. and i made banana bread. the best ever. it is so moist.
oh, if you are wondering what a boston terrier will end up looking like, here's one of our puppy parents (dad i think.

she never thinks she's wrong
I have found two new favorite activities - sitting in a beach chair on the edge of the surf reading and kayaking.
I never have been found of the beach because of the sand. i hate sand. i hate it so much. i haven't been to a real beach (one without a pool) since high school trips to Florida. The beach has definitely redeemed itself with beach chairs on the edge of the surf. I love reading while the surf comes and goes beneath me.
wednesday morning we went kayaking on a river here and i fell in love. i grew up canoeing in the buffalo river in arkansas. it is by far one of my favorite parts of childhood and am planning on taking the dog some day. i've always thought kayaks hold you in and that didn't seems to jive with my mild claustrophobia which gets way worse when water is involved. These kayaks had plenty of room and i loved loved loved paddling up and down the river. We saw a turtle, a water moccasin, and two herons, including one taking off over the water.

so i'm on the outer banks of north carolina. it is quite beautiful here. we are right on the beach. I can hear the waves crashing on the seashore. there are millions of stars. I'm looking forward to a relaxing week of thesis editing, sun laying, and reading.

am I more than you bargained for yet

we went to go see the 25th annual putum county spelling bee sunday night. my sister had mentioned
wanting to see it and I got an offer for $25 tickets so there we were. It was good. I enjoyed it.
I don't think i would pay $60 (normal price) for it, but $25 was just right.
I don't understand ticketmaster fees or the high price of broadway tickets.
We did get california pizza kitchen after as my first choice was closed. the waiter had this cute
australian accent, which jenny, rachel's friend, was convinced was faked for better tips. he was
overly friendly. we were really the only people in there (we got there close to closing). i tipped
him well.

be still my love

This morning, after my run, I learned from Weekend Edition Sunday (on NPR) that turning on your air conditioning does reduce fuel mileage, but that driving with your windows down reduces it even more. I can’t image what having the convertible top down does to the gas mileage. The story did have an interesting fact that air condition reduces hybrid mileage by 27%. That brings them near my saturn. Another reason, carter in the south, that a hybrid wouldn't have been the best choice.
Well, we are to the appendix. A short chapter on a short project.
I have taken up embossing. Dude. I am so random. Which is probably what James and Chrissy thought when they saw that I had registered for a sewing machine and got it for us. They win with the first wedding present. I do know that registing for a sewing machine must be random, BUT I am random. And I would like to be able to repair seams and tears, which is what the little machine that is so light got good reviews for. Plus, I have this strange desire to sew.
I bought my first baby present for one of my friends from high school. I also dreamt about her last night. Just about how weird it is that she has a baby in her. I’m sure the dream was brought on by the purchase and by the 10 pregnant women I have seen in the past two day.
